Novi boil water advisory also includes Walled Lake & Commerce Township | Doctor Explains what to do

UPDATE: From the Oakland County Water Resource Commissioner’s website:

The precautionary boil water notice issued on August 31 for Commerce Township and Walled Lake ended on August 31, 2022.

The precautionary boil water notice issued on August 31 for the City of Novi ended on September 1. Visit cityofnovi.org for updates.  

There is no need to continue to boil water before using it for consumption.

The Background: A precautionary boil water advisory is in effect for residents in Commerce Township, Walled Lake, and Novi due to a temporary power outage at a Great Lakes Water Authority station.

We spoke to our medical expert, Dr. Puja, about this most recent boil water advisory for Southeast Michigan. This is what she had to say:

The Expert Insight:

Dr. Puja: “All right. So the city of Novi, Walled Lake, & Commerce are still under a boil water advisory. So here is what this means for you. The first thing to do is this. Don’t use the water!

The second thing, if you have to use the water, you want to boil the water for a full minute.

The third thing you want to keep in mind is that when there is a boil water advisory, there could be contamination in your water from viruses and bacteria. Most of these can cause diarrhea and other stomach issues. Some bacteria like Legionella can even give you pneumonia.

So what’s the take home message? The take home message for you is this: you’ve got to treat these boil water advisories seriously.”
